THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES

 (2013) 140 Minutes, Rated R

Mike's Note:  I never had any desire to see this movie, but I know some of our readers wouldn't mind reading a review on this movie, so here is our first 'guest reviewer', Karyn.

Karyn's Review:  This movie was filmed locally and had a ton of hype behind it, which drew me to want to see it in the first place. It all started with Ryan Gosling being a stunt motorcycle guy - to finding out he had a kid - to him robbing banks.  When Ryan Gosling died about an hour into the movie is just about the time I walked out. This movie was a big waste of money.  For all the hype of Bradley Cooper and Ray Liotta being in it, Bradley Cooper didn't show up until Ryan Gosling died and I didn't even see Ray Liotta before I walked out, behind some other movie goers.

Karyn's Rating: Don't waste your time or money!.

THE CALL

 (2013) 94 Minutes, Rated R

Mike's Review:  You pretty much get the whole point of the movie from the trailer.  A 911 operator has a second chance to stop a killer and does everything she can to do it. This movie kind of reminded me of a good 'CSI' episode as it kept you engaged to the end.  I have to admit this was a movie I was going to put off seeing in the theater, but I'm glad I took the time to see it on the big screen.

Best Scene: The ending.  It ties up the loose ends nicely.
Mike's Rating: Matinee - Good enough to see on the big screen, just not at full price.

Beans's Review:  Halle Berry plays a 911 operator, who, in the past, had a kidnapped teenager killed by the kidnapper while the teenager was on the 911 call with her.  This same scenario resurfaces a couple of years later. This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat with the tracking by the officials of the kidnapper.  The tenseness and suspense were good enough to make one speak out during the movie to encourage Abigail Breslin, the kidnappee, to escape the kidnapper.

Best Scenes: One memorable scene is the supposedly dead man in the car trunk with the kidnappee, coming back to life.  The ending was also well done leaving the viewer feeling that the kidnapper was justifiably punished.
Beans's Rating: This movie is on the line of worth the regular price of the movie ticket and matinee price.

THE CROODS

(2013) 98 Minutes, Rated PG

Mike's Review:  This was a pretty decent kids movie.  It had some good action, a good story line about family and a few scenes actually made me laugh out loud.  On the other hand my 4 year old daughter didn't see it that way.  Some of the scenes were too intense for her.  There were a lot of scenes with explosions and big animals that made her want to jump into her mother's arms.  But on the way home from the movie, she asked when we could see it again. I think that says it all.

Best Scenes: Getting stuck in the tar and the big kitty in the dark cave.
Mike's Rating: Matinee - Good enough to see on the big screen, just not at full price.

G. I. JOE: RETALIATION

(2013) 110 Minutes, Rated PG-13

Mike's Review:  Being one of the few people that liked the first 'G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra' it wasn't too much of a stretch for me to go and see the second.  With the addition of some new cast members (Dwayne Johnson) and a little bit better story line, I enjoyed 'G.I. JOE: Retaliation' just as much as the first one if not more. For those of you that haven't seen either one it is your typical bad guys versus good guys movie with some explosions and Snake Eyes thrown in.  It wasn't a movie you would remember a lot about after watching it, but it was fun to watch.

Best Scene: The tank Dwayne Johnson was driving.
Mike's Rating: Matinee - Good enough to see on the big screen, just not at full price.

Bean's Review:  The premises of this movie is to pack as much action as possible into the allotted time to enable GI Joe and gang to save the world.  The rappelling rope scenes in the mountains were quite intense.  However, the impressive repertoire of action scenes does not compensate for the overly “comic book” flavor of the characters.  In contrast, the most recent 'Batman' and 'Spiderman' movies, although comic book action heroes, they did not come across to the viewer as “comic bookish”.

Bean's Review: Except for perhaps seeing some of the mountain scenes on a large screen, this movie can wait for digital or DVD.

Thank you for visiting 'by the by movie reviews'. We hope you liked the first movie review on our blog 'Olympus has fallen'.  More reviews are coming! The next ones to be posted are 'The Croods', 'The Call' and 'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' just to name a few.

OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN

(2013) 120 Minutes, Rated R

Mike's Review:  If you don't know the premise, this movie is about terrorist doing what they do, just this time it takes place at the White House.  'Olympus has Fallen' is your standard shoot them up, blow them up fun to watch good action movie.  It has the one man saves the day type of plot and Gerard Butler does a good job of playing the lead.  There are some of your typical over the top and unrealistic elements through out, but hey, its an action movie and it doesn't sugar coat the body count. I would say this was as good if not better then any other right guy, wrong place movie out there.

Best Scene: Rusty information extraction.  Plus there were a few good hand to hand fights.
Mike's Rating: Worth the price of the ticket.

Bean's Review: Is Gerard Butler the next "lone wolf" action hero?  We hope that realistically 'Olympus' does not fall quite as easily as portrayed in the movie.  Butler was quite convincing as an ex-Ranger secert service agent.  I would much rather see Butler in action movies such as the '300' and 'Olympus has Fallen' as opposed to the fluff romances.  The villain was just evil enough to keep your attention and Butler's dialogue was reminiscent of the older (and better) 'Die Hard' movies.

Bean's Rating: Worth the price of the ticket.

Welcome to by the by movie reviews!

Our first movie review is in the works and should be on this blog Sunday evening.

I am new to blogging so there is a little bit of a learning curve.

As for movies, I know what I like and I get asked a lot for my take on what is playing in theaters.  I also follow some movies from green light to release, so I would say I have a good knowledge base on today's movies.  Over time my reviews have gone from word of mouth to water cooler chatter to company news letters and now to a blog.  My sister will also be reviewing a majority of the movies I review to give you more insight, and a different perspective on a few of the more common box office releases.  I hope you enjoy the reviews!
